Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common orthopedic problem that has been associated with hip pain, in primarily obese male children. To determine the prevalence and clinical features of SCFE in nonobese children, authors of a retrospective multicenter study compared SCFE in 273 obese and nonobese children (mean age, 11.8 years; average body-mass index [BMI], 91st percentile; 70% obese, 17% overweight, and 13% normal weight). Nonobese patients presented at an older age than obese children (P=0.015).
51% of nonobese patients were girls, compared with 40% of the obese group.
Hip pain was the primary symptom in >90% of both obese and nonobese cases.
