In 2016, researchers using Swedish registries demonstrated a higher incidence of violence in patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder than the general population (NEJM JW Psychiatry Sep 2016 and JAMA Psychiatry 2016; 73:796). To expand on these results, the investigators again used Swedish databases to compare risks for perpetrating or being a victim of violence in each of 250,419 people with psychiatric disorders, their healthy full siblings (n=194,788), and 10 age- and sex-matched controls. Violence perpetration was defined as conviction for homicide, robbery, arson, assaults, violence against police, or sexual offenses; victimization was defined as inpatient or outpatient treatment or death as a result of being attacked.
