Lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMSs) have revolutionized the management of pancreatic fluid collections, including pancreatic pseudocysts and walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WON). Some authors have reported bleeding after a LAMS placement; this study evaluated early removal of LAMS to reduce that risk.
A protocol was developed for LAMS removal at 4 weeks in patients with a pseudocyst and at 6 weeks in those with WON. Forty patients undergoing LAMS placement were enrolled (19 with pseudocysts, 21 with WON). The median time from placement to removal was 21 days for pseudocysts and 34 days for WON. No bleeding events occurred. The authors conclude that early removal and meticulous attention to vessels in the region of the fluid collection is vit…
