Williams syndrome (WS), a genetic condition occurring in 1 of 7500 children, is a multisystem disorder that requires care from both primary care and specialist pediatricians. An American Academy of Pediatrics expert panel has published a clinical report to guide pediatricians in caring for patients with WS.
Among the recommendations:
Cardiovascular disorders (most often supravalvular aortic stenosis) occur in more than 80% of patients. Hypertension is present in 50% of patients and may be due to renal artery stenosis. Children with WS are at risk for sudden death. Consultation with a pediatric cardiologist and possibly a nephrologist is indicated for all children with WS.
