Whether or not to extend anticoagulation for venous thromboembolism (VTE) after 3 months of therapy depends on the continued presence of risk factors for recurrence, including uncontrolled medical illnesses.
To test the hypothesis that components of metabolic syndrome (hyperlipidemia, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes) impact VTE recurrence, investigators retrospectively measured the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in 151,000 patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT; mean age, 58 years) in the Indiana Network for Patient Care from 2004 to 2017. Of these patients, 68% had at least one component of metabolic syndrome; hypertension was the most common component and was present in 58%.
