Fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) are recommended for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and are the preferred modality in population-based programs. For asymptomatic, average-risk individuals with negative FIT results, further screening with colonoscopy is not recommended, but it is not uncommon.
To determine if this practice is beneficial, investigators assessed 96,804 members of a healthcare system in California (age, 50–75) who had an initial negative FIT result (<20 µg Hb/g feces) from 2008 through 2014 and then underwent colonoscopy. Patients diagnosed with CRC were identified in a cancer registry.
