The “eclipse phase” for HIV infection is defined as the time between infection and detectable viremia and has been estimated to be around 10 to 12 days (range, 7–21). This study analyzed data from 39 high-risk patients with acute HIV infections enrolled in the RV217 cohort (from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Thailand). The investigators obtained samples from participants twice a week; these newly infected patients, who did not begin antiretroviral therapy (ART) at diagnosis, were followed for up to 5 years with a median of 10 study visits in the first month after diagnosis based on a measurable plasma HIV level (defined as day 0).
