The incidental discovery of neutropenia often prompts a hematology referral, given the associated risk for infection and a serious diagnosis.
To address the clinical relevance of such a finding, investigators evaluated approximately 28,000 pediatric and 346,000 adult patients with transient and chronic neutropenia in the Copenhagen Primary Care Differential Count database, which included results of all complete blood count tests requested by general practitioners between 2000 and 2010. Neutropenia was defined as neutrophil count below 1.5×109/L for children aged 1 to 9 years, and below 1.8×109/L for individuals aged 9 to 90 years.
