Controversy exists as to the potential nephrotoxicity of intravenous iodinated radiocontrast media (ICM) in both adults and children. In the current retrospective study, researchers assessed the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) in 925 hospitalized children (mean age, 8 years) who underwent an ICM-enhanced CT scan and in a propensity score–matched cohort of 925 hospitalized children who underwent abdominal ultrasound imaging. Matching was rigorous, including 23 covariates. Results were as follows:
In each group, 889 children (96%) had an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) before imaging of ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2.
In children with eGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2, incidence of AKI was identical (2.2%) in the ICM and matched control groups.
