Withdrawal from cannabis use disorder (CUD) can increase negative affect (e.g. irritability, anger, and aggression; nervousness and anxiety; depressed mood), which might precipitate further cannabis use. No pharmacotherapy has yet demonstrated consistent efficacy for cannabis withdrawal treatment, although tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) agonists and lofexidine show some promise. Nicotine and THC have similar benefits for negative affect. In a study of the utility of the nicotine patch for reducing cannabis withdrawal symptoms, 127 individuals with CUD were encouraged to maintain abstinence via monetary awards and were randomized to a nicotine patch (7 mg) or placebo patch for 15 days. Participants were nonsmokers or light smokers.
