Initiatives promoting antibiotic stewardship often focus on the common condition of acute otitis media (AOM), for which antibiotics are often unnecessary. Although the American Academy of Pediatrics has established recommendations on antibiotic therapy in children with AOM, it is unclear how closely they are followed in practice. As part of one U.S. regional safety-net healthcare system's effort to address this issue, researchers reviewed antibiotic prescribing practices in patients aged 2 to 18 years with a diagnosis of AOM. Patients were seen in community-based clinics, a pediatric emergency department, and urgent care centers. The study excluded patients with previous tympanostomy tubes or antibiotic treatment within 30 days.
