The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines on developmental screening in pediatric primary care were first published in 2001 and updated in 2006 to recommend use of standardized screening tools at the 9-, 18-, and 24-/30-month well-child visits. To assess how often developmental screening takes place in U.S. pediatric practices, researchers used AAP Periodic Survey results from 2002, 2009, and 2016. This survey asks a random sample of about 500 practicing primary care pediatricians (PCPs) to report their practice behaviors.
Between 2002 and 2016, the use of standardized developmental screening “always/almost always” increased from 21% to 63%, in particular the use of the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (9% in 2002 to 48% in 2016). Ref…
