Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been associated with increased risk for fractures in older adults. To assess risk in children, investigators examined records of all children <18 years old in the Swedish health registry from 2006 to 2016. Children who had previous fracture or relevant chronic conditions were excluded. Propensity scoring was used to compare 115,933 children (mean age, 12.6 years) newly receiving PPIs with a carefully matched control group.
During a mean 2 years of follow up, fractures occurred in 20.2% of the PPI group versus 18.3% of the control group (hazard ratio, 1.11). Risk was increased for fractures of the upper limb (HR, 1.08), lower limb (HR, 1.19) and “other” sites (HR, 1.51), but not head or spine. Fracture risk …
