Infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms are difficult to treat and disproportionately contribute to infection-related mortality. CDC investigators tracked recent patterns of infections with clinically important MDR bacteria among patients in a large representative cohort of U.S. acute-care hospitals.
Between 2012 and 2017, the estimated incidence of infection with four common MDR pathogens declined (by 20%–40%): These pathogens included methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA; from 114 to 98 cases per 10,000 hospitalizations), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE; from 24 to 16), MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa (from 13 to 10), and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter (from 3 to 2).
