Elderly patients frequently require endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and are at increased risk for cardiopulmonary-related adverse events compared with younger patients. Furthermore, many ERCPs are performed with the assistance of anesthesiologists, which increases cost. A recent study evaluated a propofol infusion system that targets a therapeutic blood level based on a patient's weight and age, and which does not require an anesthesiologist to be present.
