Three new studies shed light on outcomes for patients who undergo carotid artery stenting (CAS) or carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in the U.S.
In one study, researchers used an American College of Surgeons database to examine postprocedural adverse events in about 900 CAS patients and 26,000 CEA patients. Thirty-day rates of a combined outcome (stroke, cardiac event, or death) were as follows:
6.3% with CAS for symptomatic carotid stenosis
5.6% with CAS for asymptomatic carotid stenosis
4.9% with CEA for symptomatic carotid stenosis
3.2% with CEA for asymptomatic carotid stenosis
