Factors that contribute to combustible cigarette smoking among teens who use e-cigarettes are not known. Using data from an online California children's health survey, researchers analyzed associations between e-cigarette use at baseline and cigarette smoking 1 year later among 1312 adolescents and young adults (48% Hispanic white; mean age, 18 years).
Overall, 37% of participants reported use of e-cigarettes and 11% smoked cigarettes. Cigarette smoking was more common in males and in those with higher parental education. Compared with never use, any e-cigarette use at baseline was associated with increased frequency of cigarette smoking at 1 year.
