It is unknown if patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk for COVID-19 compared with the general population. In the current study, researchers in the Italian province of Bergamo, a region which had a very high prevalence of infection, examined data from their IBD center's 522 patients, followed from February 19 through March 23, 2020.
There were no reported cases of COVID-19 in the IBD cohort during that period. All patients were counseled to stay on their current therapies, which included salicylates in 59%, immune modulators in 22%, and biologics in 16%.
