Ischemic conditioning — the application of brief periods of transient ischemia without producing tissue necrosis — has been shown to decrease stroke infarct volumes in animal models. The procedure can be done directly to an organ (preconditioning) or to a remote area of the body (perconditioning).
Now, investigators in France have conducted a multicenter, prospective, randomized trial to assess the utility of in-hospital ischemic perconditioning (IP) in 188 patients (mean age, 67 years) with carotid-territory ischemic stroke confirmed by MRI within 6 hours of symptom onset (median NIH stroke score, 10; median brain infarction volume, 11.4 cm3).
