The benefits of thymectomy for the treatment of myasthenia gravis have been controversial; many trials have compared thymectomy plus prednisone or prednisone alone. Questions have been addressed, such as: Can thymectomy lower the total dose of prednisone needed? Will thymectomy, by lowering prednisone or other immunosuppressive agents, help lessen the burden of side effects to patients?
