In 2018, a study revealed similar 90-day mortality among patients who received 100% of recommended caloric intake with energy-dense tube feeds and in those who received 70% of goal calories with standard tube feeds (NEJM JW Gen Med Dec 1 2018 and N Engl J Med 2018; 379:1823). However, concern remained that patients who received less than their caloric-intake goals would experience long-term adverse effects on quality of life and functional status.
