Sleep-related eating disorder (SRED) is more common in women than men, is highly prevalent (1% in young adults), and is characterized by compulsive consumption of food during partial arousal from sleep and with impaired awareness and memory for the event. There is no established treatment for the disorder, which can cause distress and obesity. However, recent findings from a small trial indicate promise.
In the 13-week clinical trial, 34 patients with SRED were randomized to flexibly dosed topiramate or placebo (mean age, 40; 74% women). Medication was titrated over 9 weeks to a maximum of 300 mg daily.
