In the DAPA-HF trial (NEJM JW Cardiol Jan 2020 and N Engl J Med 2019; 381:1995), the sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor dapagliflozin reduced the risks for cardiovascular death and worsening heart failure and improved symptoms in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Although this agent was originally approved as a diabetes treatment, 54% of the 4744 study participants did not have diabetes.
