Human coronaviruses (HCoV) have been recognized as respiratory pathogens for the past 60 years. Prior to the recognition of the coronaviruses causing SARS, MERS, and now COVID-19, all of which have a recent zoonotic origin, HCoV have been associated with generally mild disease that recur annually. Currently, four recurring HCoV are recognized: OC, 229E, HKU1, and NL63.
