Long-Term Transmission of Recurring Human Coronaviruses in Michigan

In this longitudinal study of non-SARS-CoV-2 human coronaviruses, there was distinct seasonality, with a peak in January and February. More than one quarter of cases were transmitted within a household with an approximate 3-day incubation period.

Human coronaviruses (HCoV) have been recognized as respiratory pathogens for the past 60 years. Prior to the recognition of the coronaviruses causing SARS, MERS, and now COVID-19, all of which have a recent zoonotic origin, HCoV have been associated with generally mild disease that recur annually. Currently, four recurring HCoV are recognized: OC, 229E, HKU1, and NL63.

In order to understand the epidemiology of these HCoV better, investigators used data from the Household Influenza Vaccine Evaluation (HIVE) study, a longitudinal investigation of respiratory illnesses in households with children in the Ann Arbor, Michigan, area beginning in 2010.
