Brucellosis is a relatively uncommon infection in the U.S. with onset as a generalized febrile illness that, if not promptly diagnosed and treated, can escalate to a life-threatening osteoarticular syndrome. The most common source of infection is unpasteurized contaminated dairy products. In December 2018, a patient in New York received a diagnosis of brucellosis caused by a live attenuated vaccine strain of B. abortus RB51 (used to prevent infection in cattle). The source was traced to raw milk from a dairy in Pennsylvania, where its sale is legal.
