Although parenting practices are not believed to cause autism spectrum disorder (ASD), researchers sought to examine whether early experiences such as digital media use might contribute to ASD risk. Using data from 2152 children in a longitudinal study, they examined whether media viewing (TV or DVDs), parent-child play frequency, or reading frequency at age 12 months predicted performance on the MCHAT (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) at age 19 to 30 months. Media viewing was also assessed at age 18 months. “ASD risk” was defined as having a positive MCHAT screen (≥2 critical items or ≥3 other items), while “ASD-like symptoms” were reflected by the total MCHAT-R score.
