The COVID-19 pandemic has led to multiple alterations in gastroenterology practice, both directly and in response to professional society recommendations. Through a Web-based survey of gastroenterologists at 62 U.S. and 11 Canadian centers (one respondent per center), researchers assessed the nature and extent of adaptations in practice. The survey was conducted between March 21 and April 17, 2020, and yielded the following findings:
Endoscopy volume was ≤10% of normal in 65% of centers; 97% had deferred screening colonoscopy.
More than two thirds did not have plans on how to address the growing procedural backlog.
Nearly all (96%) had implemented virtual clinic visits, and 47% conducted more than 75% of clinic visits via telemedicine.
