Antimicrobials are prescribed frequently for nursing home residents, and urinary tract infection (UTI) is the commonest entity for which they are prescribed. Misdiagnoses of uncomplicated cystitis and unlikely cystitis often prompt inappropriate antibiotic use. Investigators studied the efficacy of a multifaceted antimicrobial stewardship and quality-improvement intervention at reducing unnecessary antimicrobial use for unlikely cystitis among noncatheterized nursing home residents.
