Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is often associated with significant dehydration, and the presence of hypertension may confuse the fluid resuscitation strategy. The current study is a secondary analysis of randomized, controlled trial data in 1258 children (age, 0–18 years) admitted to the hospital for treatment of DKA. Researchers examined clinical and hemodynamic measures before and after rapid or slow rehydration and relationships between these measures and incidence of hypertension. Results were as follows:
Average heart rate was three standard deviations above the age- and sex-adjusted mean on admission.
