Studies demonstrate that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance in patients with cirrhosis is effective in improving survival. However, the effectiveness of surveillance depends on both test accuracy and surveillance utilization. As current test sensitivity in detecting early HCC is only around 65%, maximizing utilization is a key early detection and risk-reduction strategy.
In a systematic review and meta-analysis, investigators assessed HCC surveillance utilization in patients with cirrhosis and examined associated factors. They also summarized the efficacy of interventions to increase surveillance. The literature search included publications between 2010 and 2018 and abstracts from major gastroenterology and hepatology meetings.
