Endoscopists often encounter patients 18 to 49 years old with incidental adenomas at colonoscopy. Recent findings suggest that average-risk patients can follow the same guidelines for postpolypectomy surveillance as recommended for patients older than 50 (Gastrointest Endosc 2020; 91:669). However, little is known about the prevalence of, and risk factors for, advanced metachronous neoplasia in patients with young-onset adenoma (YOA).
Now, investigators have conducted a systematic review of 28 studies involving individuals 18 to 49 years old with YOA. Results were as follows:
