Whereas symptomatic intracranial stenosis is associated with increased recurrent-stroke risk, less information is available on the prognosis of asymptomatic intracranial stenosis (ICS). To gain insight, investigators conducted a population-based assessment (Oxford Vascular Study) in the U.K. among patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke recruited during a 7-year period. All patients received intensive medical therapy, including dual antiplatelet therapy for 1 month (followed by monotherapy), high-potency statins, and blood pressure treatment to current targets. The primary study goals were determining the prevalence of asymptomatic ICS and the prognosis of patients with asymptomatic ICS.
