Endometriosis-associated pain is commonly treated with hysterectomy when medical therapy fails and childbearing is complete. How effective is such surgery, and is it improved by concomitant oophorectomy? Swedish investigators used a national registry to identify 137 women (median age at surgery, 41) with endometriosis who underwent hysterectomy with or without bilateral oophorectomy for pain between 2010 and 2015. Median duration of symptoms was 10 years, 64% of patients reported previous or ongoing hormonal therapy, both ovaries were removed in 41%, and surgical complications occurred in 4%. Most women completed follow-up questionnaires about pain at 12 months after surgery and again at 37 to 107 months.
