At many medical centers, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)–guided biopsies (either fine-needle aspiration or fine-needle biopsy) are performed with the assistance of a cytopathologist, who conducts rapid onsite evaluation (ROSE), determining tissue sample adequacy for histological analysis and often arriving at a final diagnosis. ROSE has been shown to be beneficial in maximizing efficacy of tissue acquisition in many studies. However, not all centers have access to ROSE, and cytopathologists are not available after hours. An alternative practice is macroscopic onsite evaluation (MOSE), which entails looking at the tissue sample obtained and gauging its physical size as a surrogate for adequacy.
