Endoscopic prophylactic removal of large (≥10 mm) or advanced (containing high-grade dysplasia) ampullary or duodenal polyps may prevent the development of cancer in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). As there are no medications to prevent duodenal polyps from progressing to cancer, the alternative is surgery, which is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality.
