Once thought to be rare, autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is now recognized as one of the more common etiologies of acute pancreatitis. However, the diagnosis can be difficult to confirm. While some have advocated for pancreatic biopsy to be the gold standard, there are concerns about sample adequacy and risks, most notably the potential for triggering pancreatitis.
To evaluate the role of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)–guided core biopsy in diagnosing suspected AIP, researchers conducted a prospective, multicenter study in 56 patients.
