Few issues are more controversial in the world of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) than when to perform precut sphincterotomy. The term refers to a variety of endoscopic techniques whereby a biliary sphincterotomy is performed without preexisting guidewire access to the biliary tree.
