Pancreaticoduodenectomy, also known as the Whipple procedure, is usually performed to treat patients with pancreatic cancer in the head of the gland. The remnant pancreas is sewn to an afferent limb of the jejunum via a pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) anastomosis. This anastomosis is associated with a high rate of stenosis, which can lead to pain, pancreatitis, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and failure of the remnant pancreas.
