Despite advances in endoscope technology, endoscopic technique, and the widespread adoption of prophylactic pharmacologic agents, pancreatitis remains the most common severe adverse event following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) also remains a significant cause of endoscopy-related lawsuits.
In a recent retrospective study, investigators assessed trends in PEP incidence and mortality in the United States using nationwide inpatient admissions data. Among over 1.2 million patients undergoing ERCP between 2011 through 2017, findings were as follows:
