Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has been the de facto gold standard procedure to evaluate and sample pancreatic cysts for 20 years. Most endosonographers can accurately characterize most pancreatic cysts using EUS imaging combined with cyst fluid analysis, but some cysts defy simple characterization, and a definitive diagnosis can be elusive even after EUS evaluation. Recently, a microforceps, inserted through an EUS fine-needle aspiration (FNA) needle, has been used to sample the lining of pancreatic cysts. A recent study provides a prospective evaluation of its utility and safety in 101 patients with pancreatic cysts.
