Since the approval in 2012 of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) by the FDA for use in preexposure HIV infection prophylaxis (PrEP), numerous additional studies and clinical experience have demonstrated its effectiveness when taken regularly. For this study, researchers evaluated use of ≥30 days of TDF/FTC for PrEP according to the 2012–2018 MarketScan Commercial and Medicare Supplemental database, excluding persons with HIV or hepatitis B virus infection.
