The Streptococcus genus comprises >50 species that cause a wide range of human infections. Although the variable risk for infective endocarditis (IE) across the species spectrum of community-acquired streptococcal bacteremia is well recognized, no contemporary studies specifically quantify these differences.
To provide quantitative data, investigators identified cases of streptococcal blood stream infection (BSI) in the Capital Region of Denmark between 2008 and 2017, and queried these cases against ICD-10 codes from the Danish National Patient Registry for IE hospitalizations.
Among 6506 BSIs from 6224 patients (236 with >1 BSI), overall IE prevalence was 7.1%. The lowest IE prevalence was for S. pneumoniae (1.2%) and S. pyogenes (1.9%) BSI.…
