To inform the debate about potential teratogenic risks associated with antidepressants, investigators analyzed data from a 14-year U.S. survey including 30,630 mothers of infants with birth defects and 11,478 controls without birth defects matched for time and place of birth. Information about antidepressant use during pregnancy was obtained from interviews conducted 9 to 11 months postpartum. Birth outcomes were assessed among infants of women who took no antidepressants, those who took antidepressants during early pregnancy, and those who took such medications before or after the first trimester.
