Cannabidiol (CBD) is increasingly touted in the popular press — despite the absence of scientific evidence — as a treatment for numerous physical and mental symptoms. To examine its effects in people with diagnosed cannabis use disorder and an interest in stopping use, researchers performed a two-stage, randomized, controlled trial using an adaptive Bayesian design. Abstinence was determined by both self-report and urinalysis.
In stage one, researchers examined whether CBD doses (200, 400, and 800 mg) reduced cannabis use more than placebo in 48 participants; both 400-mg and 800-mg doses were found effective.
