Following the introduction in 2000 of the pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV7), the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) decreased markedly. However, since 2013, and after PCV7 had been supplanted by the 13-valent vaccine (PCV13), the incidence of IPD from serotype 4, which is covered by both vaccines, has increased.
To further assess this recent trend, investigators at the CDC identified cases of IPD from 2010 through 2018 based on the isolation of Streptococcus pneumoniae from a normally sterile site using the Active Bacterial Core Surveillance system (ABCs). The researchers were also able to identify which patients were persons experiencing homelessness (PEH).
