Cardiometabolic factors such as obesity, diabetes, and chronic hypertension all raise risk for preterm birth; but what are the maternal consequences of this obstetric outcome? To explore the association between preterm birth and premature death, investigators examined mortality among women with singleton births in Sweden from 1973 to 2015. Risk for preterm birth was associated with factors such as maternal hypertensive disorders, preeclampsia, diabetes, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, obesity, and cigarette smoking.
