Select patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis benefit from carotid revascularization, most commonly with carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Although more controversial, revascularization for asymptomatic carotid stenosis is also frequently performed in the U.S. A new option that has been developed for carotid stenosis, called transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR), has now been evaluated in a multicenter registry.
The TCAR technique involves direct surgical access to the common carotid artery. Flow is reversed by placing a conduit to the femoral vein.
