Squamous cell carcinoma occasionally develops within areas of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), and some studies suggest that other cancers also might be associated with this dermatologic condition. In this population-based South Korean cohort study, researchers compared incident cancer rates in 22,000 patients with HS and 180,000 age- and sex-matched controls (mean age at baseline in both groups, 34).
During average follow-up of about 5 years, incidence of newly diagnosed cancer was significantly higher in patients with HS than in controls (358 vs. 290 cases/100,000 person-years; hazard ratio, 1.28 after adjustment for comorbidities).
