SPORT was a landmark clinical trial in which 2500 patients with lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis, or degenerative spondylolisthesis received surgical or nonsurgical treatment; the study included both randomized and observational cohorts. Key results were published between 2006 and 2008, but the SPORT database has yielded additional insights during subsequent years.
