Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce the risk for heart failure (HF) events and progression of renal disease among individuals with type 2 diabetes. In the placebo-controlled, manufacturer-funded DAPA-HF trial, the SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin reduced the risk for HF hospitalization and cardiovascular death among individuals who had HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), regardless of whether they had diabetes (NEJM JW Cardiol Jan 2020 and N Engl J Med 2019; 381:1995). Two studies provide more evidence about the role of this class of medications for the treatment of HFrEF.
